Longwood Defeats Visiting Norfolk State 17-4

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Sophomore Kenny Cassidy/Chesapeake had four hits and four RBI, and freshman Kyri Washington/Prospect had three hits and four RBI, to lead Longwood University to 17-4 non-conference baseball victory past in-state opponent Norfolk State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Wednesday evening at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers (8-8) led 6-0 after three innings and had 20 hits in the contest, as freshman Joe Manion/Midlothian earned his first collegiate pitching win with the first six innings on the mound.  Chase Kyriacou had a home run and three RBI for the Spartans (5-10), while Cooper Jones took the pitching loss with the first four innings.  Longwood will host UNC Asheville for a three-game weekend series at Bolding Stadium this weekend, March 15-17, the program's first-ever Big South Conference games -- beginning Friday at 6 p.m.

Longwood scored three runs in the second to lead 3-0, as junior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (2-3, RBI) and senior Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (1-5) each singled before sophomore Brandon Delk/Newport News (3-4, 3 RBI) reached on a fielding error at second base to load the bases with no outs.  Burkett crossed the plate on a fielder's choice RBI to shortstop by Washington (3-4, 4 RBI), and both Delk and Washington scored on a two-run double to right center field by Cassidy (4-4, 4 RBI).  The Lancers added three more runs in the third to lead 6-0, after junior Alex Owens/Purcellville (3-5, RBI) reached on a one-out single followed by a walk to Burkett before Delk also walked to load the bases again.  Washington plated two more runs with his double down the left field line, and Cassidy added a run-scoring single that scored Delk, though Washington was out at the plate on the play.

Norfolk State got on the board with a run in the fourth to make it 6-1 when Zach Markel (2-5) singled and later scored on an RBI ground out by Kyle Vaas (0-4, RBI).

Longwood scored two runs in the fifth to lead 8-1 after Owens doubled and Burkett was hit by a pitch before a two-run double to the wall in left center field by Delk scored both runners.  It could have been a bigger inning for the Lancers as Washington reached on an infield single and Cassidy also was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out, but a double play ended the threat.  The Lancers scored a run in the sixth when freshman C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-5, 2 RBI) walked and later scored with two outs on an RBI double from Burkett.

Norfolk State scored three runs in the seventh to make it 9-4 after Justin Lee (1-2) walked and Mikey Bruno (1-2) singled ahead of a three-run home run to left field by Kyriacou (1-4, 3 RBI).

Longwood also scored three runs in the seventh to lead 12-4 when Delk led off with a triple to the wall in right center and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Washington.  Singles by Cassidy and freshman Travis Burnette/Lynchburg (1-5) preceded a two-run single down the left field line by Roth that plated both runners.  The Lancers added five runs in the eighth, getting a solo home run to left center field by Owens to open the at-bat, his team-leading third homer this season, and a two-run homer to left by freshman Blake Ream/Yorktown (2-5, 2 RBI) to close the at-bat, his second round-tripper in two days.  In between, Delk contributed another RBI double and Cassidy added a run-scoring single.

Manion (1-2) started for Longwood and pitched the first 6.0 innings, scattering four hits and one run, earned, with two walks and six strikeouts.

Jones (0-1) started for Norfolk State and pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs, six earned, with two walks and three strikeouts.
