HIGH POINT, N.C. – Sophomore Jaclyn Reagan/Crossville, Tenn. scored a career-high 12 points as one of four double-digit scorers for the Longwood University women's basketball team in a 68-54 loss at Big South Conference opponent High Point University (5-3, 1-0 BSC) on Friday evening. All of Reagan's four field goals came from beyond the arc for another personal-best mark. Longwood pulled within nine points with less than four minutes to play in the first half, but was unable to come any closer, as High Point secured its lead with an 18-3 run. Sophomore Daeisha Brown/Richmond paced the squad with 13 points in the decision, while four different Lancers tallied four rebounds apiece. The Panthers' Kaylah Keys notched a game-high 23 points for the home squad. Longwood (3-4, 0-1 BSC) kicks off a five-game homestand on Sunday, December 15 when the team welcomes Savannah State University to Willett Hall for a 2 p.m. tilt.
"Our goal is to be a transition team, however, you can't get out in transition if you don't rebound the basketball. We got outworked in the first half and that just can't happen. There is a lot of talent on this team, but we need to compete at a higher level. We have eight days to prepare for Savannah State, and for eight days we'll be working on defensive rebounding."
The squads battled aggressively in the early part of the night, trading the lead on four occasions in the first minute and a half of play. Redshirt-senior Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas knotted the score at 7-7 on a pull-up jumper, but HPU broke the game open with a 20-2 run over the next nine minutes, capped off by a bucket from Keys, to give the Panthers a 27-9 advantage at 9:16. Sophomore Khalilah Ali/Suffolk broke the silence for the Lancers with a layup from the left side, however High Point maintained at least a 17-point buffer until Reagan sparked an 11-0 spurt for Longwood with her first three of the season at 6:17. During the stretch, sophomore Kyndal Skersick/Orlando, Fla. added a three of her own and Reagan recorded another to cut the deficit to single-digits at 32-23 with less than four minutes to go in the first. The Lancers were unable to come any closer, though, as the Panthers outscored the visitors, 10-3, in the final minutes of the half to take a 42-26 lead into the break.
High Point continued its run coming out of halftime, tallying the first eight points of the second half to take its largest lead of the night at 50-26. Brown converted on a pair of free throws and Tobeck scored four consecutive points to make it 50-32 with just over 15 minutes to play. The Panthers led by as many as 24 on two more occasions, including at 61-37 with 11:12 remaining, before Brown completed a three-point play to spark a 12-4 Lancer run and cut the margin to 16 at 65-49. After three points from the Panthers, Skersick hit a layup and Reagan drained another three in the final minute of play to make the final score 68-54 in favor of High Point.
In addition to Reagan and Brown, Skersick and Ali registered double-digit points with 11 and 10, respectively. Tobeck, Brown, Reagan and freshman Treasure Avery/Lincolnton, N.C. totaled four rebounds apiece. Brown tied a career high with five assists, as well. As a team, the Lancers shot 36% (21-59) from the floor, including 27% (8-30) from beyond the arc, and 80% (4-5) from the line.
Stacia Robertson led the Panthers on the boards with 13 rebounds in the outing. As a whole, High Point shot ¬¬40% (24-60) from the field, 39% (7-18) from three-point territory and 68% (13-19) from the foul line.
Friday's contest marked the 28th meeting ever between Longwood and High Point in the sport of women's basketball. The Panthers now hold a 17-11 edge in the all-time series.
