Longwood Falls At William and Mary 13-1 | Lancers Return Home To Host James Madison Tuesday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Longwood University dropped a 13-1 baseball decision on the road at the College of William and Mary from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Monday night in Williamsburg.  The Lancers (23-20) were led by sophomore Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) with an RBI single in the fifth inning, while junior Kyler Morgan|Lancaster, Pa. (Lampeter-Strasburg) took the pitching loss against the Tribe (29-23).  Longwood will play its final home game of the season on Tuesday night, May 15, hosting James Madison University of the CAA at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 6 p.m.

Longwood fell behind early at William and Mary, trailing 10-0 after four innings as the hosts scored two runs in the first, one run in the second, four runs in the third, and three runs in the fourth.  The Lancers scored a run in the fifth when Burkett (1-3, RBI) singled with two outs to score sophomore Alex Owens|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-4) who had doubled with one out.  W&M added three more runs in the seventh for the final margin.

Longwood also had hits from freshmen Joey Varaksa|Charlottesville (Albemarle) (1-3) and Conner Hall| Mechanicsville (Atlee) (1-1), the latter while pinch-hitting in the ninth.  Morgan (5-6) started and took the pitching loss for the Lancers with the first 2.0 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs with no walks and no strikeouts.

William and Mary was led by Michael Katz (2-5, 4 RBI) with a home run and four RBI, Ryan Lindemuth (2-4, 3 RBI) with a triple and three RBI, Ryan Brown (2-3, 2 RBI), Sean Aiken (2-4, 2 RBI), and Devin White (2-4, 2 RBI) with a home run and two RBI.  Jay McCarthy (1-4) gained the mound win for the Tribe with the first 6.0 innings, scattering three hits and one earned run with two walks and six strikeouts.
