Zach Jordan|Hopewell (Matoaca) garnered the pitching win against the Patriots (25-14). Longwood will play again on Saturday, April 21, hosting North Carolina A&T University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for a doubleheader at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville at 1 p.m.
Longwood scored three runs in the third and three more runs in the fifth, before adding two insurance runs in the eighth. In the third, Hall (2-5) doubled to open the inning and crossed the plate after a sacrifice bunt from sophomore
Zach Mihalko|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (1-2) and an accompanying error. Mihalko later scored on a passed ball, and Newman (2-5, RBI) added a run-scoring single that plated sophomore captain
Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) (1-3) who had drawn a walk.
In the fifth, Lacy (2-5, RBI) and Delk (2-5, RBI) each contributed RBI doubles that scored Dickason (walk) and Lacy, respectively, while freshman
Travis Biddix|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (1-4, RBI) added a sacrifice fly that pushed Newman (single) across the plate. In the eighth, Burkett (1-3, 2 RBI) provided a two-out, two-run home run to left field that scored Hall (error) as well.
Jordan (3-2) gained the pitching win for Longwood with 1.2 innings of shutout relief, scattering one hit with one walk and no strikeouts. Freshman
Tyler Wislocki|Annandale (W.T. Woodson) added 2.0 innings of scoreless middle relief, yielding no hits with one walk and one strikeout. Freshman
Aaron Myers|Newport News (Denbigh) (2) tossed the final 3.0 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run with three walks and five strikeouts for the save.
George Mason scored five runs in the third inning, and added a late run in the ninth while getting a two-run double by Blaise Fernandez (2-5, 2 RBI), RBI singles from Jake Leonardo (3-5, RBI), Zach Helgeson (1-4, RBI) and Josh Leemhuis (0-4, RBI), along with a run-scoring grounder by
Chris Cook (0-3, RBI). Michael Bowie (0-1) took the mound loss for the Patriots with 1.2 innings of relief, allowing four hits and three earned runs with one walk and one strikeout.
Longwood swept its two games with George Mason this season, including a 9-7 home win March 14 in Farmville. The Patriots, however, still lead the all-time series between the two schools at 7-4.
