Longwood Falls At Mount St. Mary's 13-10

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Longwood University fell 13-10 in a women's lacrosse game at Mount St. Mary's University of the Northeast Conference Monday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Junior Jamie Brentlinger|Gambrills, Md. (Arundel) continues to pace the Lancers offense as she tallied her second four-goal effort in a row. Longwood (1-4) will play Drexel University of the Colonial Athletics Association Wednesday, March 14 at 6 p.m., in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Longwood seemed to have the upper hand through the first period with a 5-4 lead, also holding an edge in shots with 16 to the Mount's 10 as well as more ground balls (14-11) and draw controls (5-4). The tables turned in the second half, however, as MSM out-shot the Lancers 20-10, grabbed more ground balls (11-6) and collected twice as many draw controls (10-5).

The Lancers struck first with goals by redshirt-freshman Alexa Anderson|Richmond (St. Catherines) and senior Jessica Rudloff|West Chester, Pa. (West Chester) at 24:31 and 23:21, respectively. Less than three minutes later, Mount St. Mary's quickly answered with two of its own to tie the game as both goals came off free position attempts. The hosts then took the 3-2 lead at 17:02, but Anderson would net a free position attempt at 10:58 t0 tie the game yet again. The Lancers scored two more back-to-back goals at 5:06 and 4:38 from free position attempts by Rudloff and Brentlinger, respectively, to take another two-goal lead. MSM then had a last-second free position attempt that got by junior transfer Mollie Zimmerman|Fairpoint, N.Y. (Monroe CC|Catawba College) for the 5-4 score at intermission.

The game stayed close for most of the second half until Mount St. Mary's took the lead for good via a free position goal with 20:56 remaining to make the score 8-7. That goal was the fourth in a five-goal run by MSM, which the Lancers were never able to overcome despite two more goals from Brentlinger at 7:22 and 4:45 that brought the Lancers within 10-9 and 11-10, respectively. Mount St. Mary's sealed the victory, scoring the final two goals of the game at 3:30 and 1:10.

Brentlinger's four goals were a game-high, while she also collected two ground balls and two draw controls with one caused turnover. Rudloff and Anderson both scored two goals on three shots in the road loss, while seniors Hannah Riggs|Eden Prairie, Minn. (Eden Prairie) and Sam Stifler|Jarrettsville, Md. (North Harford) each scored one goal. Riggs collected a team-high three ground balls as well as one draw control and caused turnover, and Stifler registered two ground balls and two draw controls.  Zimmerman played all 60 minutes for the loss, making 12 saves with one ground ball.
