Longwood Squares Off Against Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Longwood University women's basketball team will take on in-state rival Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Saturday, December 1. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Hokies' Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg.

Looking at Longwood
The Lancers are looking to snap a four-game skid after falling to the University of Pittsburgh, 86-60, in their most recent outing. The team is currently 1-5 overall this season. Through six games, senior Chelsea Coward|Mechanicsville leads LU with a double-double average of 17.8 points per game and 11.2 rebounds per game. Senior Crystal Smith|Richmond is second on the team with 11.7 points per game, followed by freshman Daeisha Brown|Richmond with 9.8 points per game. Freshman Khalilah Ali|Suffolk is second on the squad with 6.5 rebounds per game. As a team, the Lancers are shooting 36% (133-368) from the field, including 30% (47-158) from beyond the arc, and 65% (60-93) from the line.

Scouting Virginia Tech
The Hokies are 3-2 on the season after defeating Wisconsin, 47-38, on Nov. 28 and downing George Washington, 50-31, on Nov. 25. Virginia Tech, under the direction of second-year head coach Dennis Wolff, is led by Junior Monet Tellier with 10.4 points per game and senior Alyssa Fenyn with 7.2 points per game. Freshman Taijah Campbell is first on the team with 7.4 rebounds per game. As a whole, the hokies are shooting 35% (91-258) from the field, including 26% (16-61) from three-point territory, and 71% (34-48) from the foul line.

Series History
Virginia Tech currently holds a 7-2 advantage in the all-time series against Longwood. The teams first met during the 1975-76 season when Longwood earned a 63-50 victory. The Hokies took a 62-54 decision when the squad's last faced off on February 10, 2011. The teams went to the break tied at 24-24, but the Hokies went on a 9-2 run to open the second half and led the rest of the way. The Lancers were paced by Emma Zieverink with a season-high 12 points and Crystal Smith with 11 points.
