FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University men's tennis team won both its matches on the first day of the National Independent Tournament Friday afternoon, topping Seattle 4-3 and North Carolina Central 4-0. Junior Nobu Tanaka|Potomac, Md. (St. Johns College HS) has won his last 10 matches, beating his No. 1 singles foe from Seattle 6-2, 6-2 as well as the No. 1 player from NCCU 6-2, 6-1. The Lancers (10-7) face NJIT tomorrow (Saturday), April 16 at 8:30 a.m. in the tournament's final day.

Tanaka also paired with freshman Crescente Lesser|Santiago, Chile (La Reina) in both matches, winning at No. 2 doubles 8-4 versus Seattle and then leading 4-3 against NCCU before ending early. Lesser won twice on the day at No. 3 singles, playing Seattle 6-1, 6-2 and NCCU 6-1, 5-1 before also ending early. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Marc Ferrigno|Hvidovre, Denmark (Brondby Gymnasium) and freshman Jimmy Davis|Manassas (Stonewall Jackson) were victorious 8-1 against NCCU but fell in a close 9-7 match to Seattle. Ferrigno played No. 2 singles in both matches, winning 6-2, 6-2 against Seattle but trailed 4-6, 1-2 to NCCU before ending early. Davis decided the Seattle match with his three-set victory at No. 4 singles 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. He was also leading in his match against NCCU 6-4, 1-1 before it ended early.

Paired together at No. 3 doubles was freshmen Edward Becker|Sydney, Australia (Manly Selective Campus)  and Hunter Barnes|Chesapeake (Grassfield), earning an 8-1 win over NCCU but falling to Seattle 8-4. At No. 5 singles, Becker dropped 6-3, 6-2 against Seattle yet swept his NCCU foe by two sets of 6-0. Barnes also fell against Seattle in the No. 6 slot 7-6 (3), 6-3, sweeping NCCU 6-0, 6-0.
