Longwood To Host UNC Asheville For Pink Zone Game

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University women's basketball team is hosting Big South Conference member UNC Asheville on Tuesday, February 8, at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall in Farmville. The game is the WBCA Pink Zone, with one-half of the proceeds going to the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation. Longwood (5-16) is coached by interim head coach Bill Reinson and is led by junior Brittanni Billups (10.2p, 6.3r) and is coming off a 54-46 setback at Winthrop University last Saturday. UNC Asheville (10-11) is coached by Betsy Blose and is led by Kendall Shepard (14.7p). The Lancers defeated the Bulldogs 76-66 on January 24 in Asheville, North Carolina. Krystal Garrison scored a career-high 25 points while Emilee Dunton added career-highs of 13 points and six assists.

Last Time Out
Longwood is coming off a 54-46 setback at Winthrop University of the Big South Conference on Saturday evening in Rock Hill, S.C.. The Lancers trailed 33-20 at halftime but went on a 16-2 run to start the second half to take the 36-35 lead with 14:22 remaining. Chelsea Coward scored 12 points during the run. A Brittany Jones layup with 12:22 remaining pulled Longwood within two at 42-40, but the hosts pushed the lead back to 47-40 with 10:16 remaining. The rest of the points for both teams came at the foul line with the hosts outscoring the Lancers 7-6 to preserve the 54-46 victory. Coward paced Longwood with 19 points.

UNC Asheville (10-11) is coached by Betsy Blose and is led by Kendall Shepard (14.7p), Lindsey Montgomery (13.3p, 8.3r), Lindsey Thompson (12p) and Kelli Riles (11.7p, 10.9r). The Bulldogs are shooting 40.5% from the floor, including 29.3% from behind the arc, and 71.1% from the foul line while averaging 68.5 points and allowing 71.7 points.

Series History
Longwood and UNC Asheville have met three times in the sport of women's basketball with the Lancers leading the series 2-1. Longwood defeated the Bulldogs 76-66 on January 24 in Asheville, N.C.. Krystal Garrison paced the Lancers with 25 points while Emilee Dunton added 13 points and six assists.

Next Up...
Longwood starts a four-game road trip on Thursday when it travels to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference at 7 p.m.. The Lancers also travel to Savannah Sate (2.13), CSU Bakersfield (2.19) and Gardner-Webb (2.23) before returning home for Senior Day against Savannah State (2.27, 2 p.m.).

Longwood plays seven games against opponents from the Big South Conference in 2010-11. The Lancers are 1-3 this season after winning at UNC Asheville (76-66). The Lancers fell to High Point (65-68), Liberty (71-75) and Winthrop (46-54). The Lancers went 2-2 against the BSC last season, notching wins over High Point and Winthrop while falling to Liberty and Gardner-Webb.

The Longwood home game against UNC Asheville on February 8 has been named the “PINK Lancer” game. One-half of the proceeds from the game will be donated to the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation.
