Longwood Welcomes Bucknell, Quinnipiac And Stony Brook For Longwood Classic

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University softball team is set to host the Longwood Classic on February 26-27 at Lancer Field in Farmville. The Lancers (4-0) will host Bucknell, Quinnipiac and Stony Brook for the two-day tournament. Longwood will face Stony Brook at 1 p.m. and Quinnipiac at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, and will play Stony Brook at 1 p.m. and Bucknell at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27. Admission is free to all Longwood University spring sporting events.

Longwood is 4-0 after sweeping the Lancer Leadoff last weekend at Lancer Field in Farmville. Senior pitcher Briana Wells went 3-0 in the circle, giving up six runs in 20.0 innings with 13 strikeouts. Sophomore Brittany Shotwell went 1-0 and allowed jus one run in eight innings (0.88 ERA). Sophomore Brooke Short hit .533 (8-15) with four home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored while senior Nichole Simmons hit .500 (6-12) with one double and two RBI. The Lancers defeated Quinnipiac 4-1 last weekend.

Bucknell is 1-4 and has dropped four straight contests. The Bison are led offensively by Jessie Snyder (5-16) and Mallory Lyons (2-12, 2 RBI). Alex MacLean is 1-2 in the circle with a 1.84 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 19.0 innings while Bridget Gates is 0-2 with a 4.32 ERA in 11.1 innings.

Quinnipiac is returning to Farmville after going 1-3 in the Lancer Leadoff last weekend. Jacquelin Ristow (4-11, 4 runs, 2 RBI) and Lauren Salgado (3-13, 3 runs) lead the Bobcats at the plate. Emily O'Keefe is 1-1 and has given up eight runs in 12.2 innings (4.42 ERA) with seven strikeouts.

Stony Brook is opening its 2011 campaign this weekend. The Seawolves went 32-21-1 last season. Bernadette Tenuto (.217, 11 runs, 23 RBI) and Shannon O'Shea (.313, 9 RBI, 8 2B) are the top returners for Stony Brook. Colleen Matthes (5-5, 3.45 ERA) returns in the circle for the Seawolves.
