PROVO, Utah -- Longwood University dropped a 92-60 men's basketball road decision at Brigham Young University of the West Coast Conference Friday night in Provo, Utah during the Chicago Invitational Challenge.  The Lancers (1-3) led 10-4 early (16:41), and trailed just 35-29 at halftime before the Cougars (2-1) scored 57 second-half points on 64% (21-33) shooting toward the home victory.  LU was led by senior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 18 points while making 8-12 shots, including 2-3 three-point field goals.  BYU was led by Charles Abouo with a game-high double-double of 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.  Longwood will continue its competition in the four-game, exempt tournament on Tuesday night, November 22, remaining on the road at the University of Nevada of the Western Athletic Conference in Reno, Nevada beginning at 10 p.m. ET.

“We felt like we had a good game plan going into the game, and we were really good at executing that in the first half -- keeping their two big guys from scoring inside,” said ninth-year head coach Mike Gillian.  “Even though they shot the ball extremely well from the perimeter in the first half, we were within striking distance and wanted to make them prove that they could continue making those shots.  As the game went along, they did keep making threes and continued to stretch the lead in the second half.”

Longwood took its early 10-4 lead at 16:41 following a trio of three-pointers by senior Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch), Carter, and redshirt-senior Durann Neil|Pleasantville, N.J. (Leap Academy), along with a free throw from senior Jan van der Kooij|Tiendeveen, The Netherlands (Roelof van Echten).  It was a quick 10-2 run for the Lancers after BYU scored the game's first basket on a dunk by Noah Hartsock.  The Cougars responded with a 7-0 run to lead 11-10 at 12:33, but senior Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) made a jumper for a 12-11 lead at 12:30.  It would be the last advantage of the night for the visitors as the hosts took the lead for good at 14-12 with a three-pointer at 10:54.  Longwood did manage to close to within 24-23 at 5:07 on a jumper by Washington, however, BYU closed the half with an 11-6 run to lead 35-29 at the intermission.

Longwood scored the first basket of the second half on a jumper from Carter before BYU took control with a 19-4 run to lead 54-35 with 13:51 on the clock.  The Cougars continued to extend the advantage, leading 73-47 on a dunk by Abouo at 8:13, and 88-57 after a three-pointer at 3:29.  BYU made its 15th three-pointer with 19-seconds left to provide for its largest lead and the final margin.  The Cougars shot 64% (21-33) in the second half, including 56% (9-16) on three-pointers.

Carter led Longwood with his 18 points, adding four rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.  van der Kooij finished with nine points, including two three-pointers.  LU shot 41% (23-56) from the field, including 38% (9-24) on three-pointers, and 46% (5-11) at the free throw line.

Obouo led BYU with his game-high double-double of 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.  Hartsock added 18 points, while Stephen Rogers had 17 points and Damarcus Harrison added 11 points off the bench for the Cougars.  BYU shot 55% (32-58) from the field, including 58% (15-26) on three-pointers, and 57% (13-23) at the line.  Brandon Davies, the team's leading scorer, finished with two points, four rebounds, and five turnovers.  It was the first meeting between the two schools in men's basketball.
