Longwood Drops Slugfest To James Madison 17-13

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 17-13 baseball decision to visiting James Madison University of the Colonial Athletic Association Wednesday afternoon at Bolding Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (11-12) were led by seniors Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) and Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) with five hits and four hits, respectively, while the Dukes (13-11) took advantage of a 12-run third inning en route to their road victory. Longwood will remain at home to play again on Friday afternoon, April 2, hosting Maryland-Baltimore County of the America East Conference for a doubleheader at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m..

James Madison opened with three runs in the first inning, including a lead-off solo home run to center field by Johnny Bladel (4-5, 2 RBI) but Longwood answered with three runs in the first as well on a three-run home run to left field by senior Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-3, 4 RBI) -- the fourth homer of the year for Cerreto. The Lancers added three more runs in the second inning to lead 6-3 after an RBI double by Kimble (5-6, 2 RBI) and a two-run single by freshman Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (2-4, 2 RBI). The Dukes took control with their 12-run third inning that was aided by three errors and four walks, including two with the bases loaded. JMU did get two home runs during the at bat from Matt Tenaglia (2-5, 6 RBI), including a grand slam and a two-run shot, both to right field as the visitors opened a 15-6 lead.

Longwood scored three more runs in the third as well to close to within 15-9 as Kimble added another RBI double and Havers (4-6, 4 RBI) contributed a two-run single. JMU added two more runs in the fifth on a two-run homer to left center by Matt Browning (1-4, 3 RBI), and the Lancers scored a run in the fifth to make it 17-10 following a run-scoring single from senior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-6, RBI). LU added three runs in the eighth to provide for the final four-run margin of defeat, getting another two-run single from Havers and a sacrifice fly from Cerreto. It was the 18th career sac fly by Cerreto to tie him for the school-record with Jeff Rohm '87 and Rhett Pfitzner '97.

Sophomore Matt Gwaltney/Chesterfield (Matoaca) (0-2) took the pitching loss for Longwood with two-thirds of an inning of relief, allowing three hits and six runs, two earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Freshman Kyle Long/Halifax (Halifax County) pitched 2.0 scoreless inning for the Lancers, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

David Edwards (1-0) earned the pitching win for JMU with 4.1 innings of relief, scattering five hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and four walks.
