CONWAY, S.C. – The Longwood University softball team won a pair of games on Friday afternoon, defeating Kent State University 1-0 before topping Siena College 6-0 at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, South Carolina. Junior Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to score the only run in the first game. Junior Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) extended her hitting streak to 16 games, the fifth-longest in school history, after getting a hit in both games. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, March 27, when they face the host Coastal Carolina University at 10 a.m. and Kent State at 12:15 p.m..

In the Kent State game, neither team could find much offense. The Lancers stranded nine baserunners and had eight hits, but couldn't score until a home run by Margadonna (2-3, RBI) in the top of the seventh inning put Longwood ahead 1-0. Junior Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) forced two groundouts and struck out the third batter in the bottom of the seventh inning to finish the complete game shutout. The Lancers threatened to break the stalemate in the third inning when Margadonna doubled to right field. Freshman Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) (2-4) followed with an infield hit to put runners on the corners, but junior Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) popped up to the shortstop to end the inning.

Wells (17-4) scattered three hits over seven innings with six strikeouts. Kylie Reynolds (6-10) received the loss for Kent State after giving up one run on eight hits in seven innings with six strikeouts.

Against Siena, the Lancers got their bats going early as they scored a pair of runs in the second inning, the first when Simmons (1-2) scored on a hit by senior Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) (2-2, RBI) and the second on an RBI double by sophomore Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) (3-3, RBI, 2B) that scored Ketsdever. Longwood added another run in the fifth inning when Nuckols (1-2) scored on a wild pitch to put the Lancers ahead 3-0. They would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, two coming on a double down the left field line by freshman Kellie Bridgeman/Dinwiddie (Dinwiddie) (1-1). Sophomore Courtney Long/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-3, RBI) added an RBI single to make the final score 6-0.

Junior Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (3-3) gave up two hits with four strikeouts in seven shutout innings and earned the win. Amanda Filippazzo (1-8) received the loss after giving up six runs, only two of them earned, on 11 hits with four walks in six innings.
