Longwood Rallies Past Mount St. Mary's 11-10

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team rallied past Mount St. Mary's University 11-10 on Saturday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Junior Cara O'Brien/Arlington (Bishop O'Connell) led the Lancers with four goals and one assist while junior Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) added three goals, including the game-winner. Longwood (2-3) returns to action on Tuesday, March 16, when they face the University of Richmond in Richmond at 4 p.m..

The game was tightly contested as neither team led by more than two goals. Mount St. Mary's (2-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead 2:28 into the game but O'Brien scored back-to-back goals in a 40-second span to put Longwood ahead 2-1 with 25:38 remaining in the first half. The Mountaineers answered with a pair of goals before O'Brien scored her third goal of the day on a free position shot with 18:25 remaining to tie the score at 3-3. The Mount scored another goal but Karli Brentlinger and junior Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) each scored to put Longwood ahead 5-4 with 6:12 remaining in the period. The Mount would go on to score the final two goals of the half and carried a 6-5 lead in to halftime.

The Mountaineers scored the first goal of the second half to pull ahead 7-5. Karli Brentlinger scored her second goal of the game with 28:24 remaining but the Mount answered less than 30 seconds later and scored to push the lead to 8-6. Junior Amanda Bereznay/Gwynn Oak, Md. (Setan Keough)  scored with 27:38 remaining to pull the Lancers within one at 8-7. The Mount went ahead 9-7 when Emily Kirby scored on a free position attempt with 26:36 remaining. The scoring slowed down for both teams as neither team could find the goal for almost 10 minutes before freshman Jamie Brentlinger/Odenton, Md. (Arundel) scored to snap the dry spell and make the score 9-8 with 16:39 remaining. The Mount scored with 14:21 remaining to take a 10-8 lead but would not score again. O'Brien scored her fourth goal of the game with 13:08 remaining and Dean scored with 7:03 left in the game to tie the score at 10-10. Karli Brentlinger scored the game-winning goal with 59 seconds remaining in the game.

Junior Juli Liebig/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) allowed 10 goals with two saves in sixty minutes in goal for the Lancers.

Longwood was led by O'Brien with five points (4 goals, 1 assist) and Karli Brentlinger with four points (3g, 1a). Dean scored two goals for the Lancers. Junior Duan Wright/Church Hill, Md. (Queen Anne's) picked up five ground balls and caused four turnovers while sophomore Sam Stifler/Jarrettsville, Md. (North Harford) was credited with five ground balls. Karli Brentlinger and Liebig each picked up four ground balls as the Lancers led the Mount in ground balls 29-19.

The Mountaineers were led by Jordan Certeza with four goals and two assists while Ashley Johnson added three goals with one assist. Brigid McTavish posted 12 saves in goal while allowing 11 goals. The Mount did not take advantage of free position attempts, going 1-5 on eight meter attempts.
