CLINTON, S.C. – Longwood University won a pair of softball games against Presbyterian College, winning the first game 8-3 and the second game 11-2 in five innings on Saturday afternoon in Clinton, South Carolina. Senior
Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) went 7-for-8 with two home runs and six RBI in the two games. Longwood improved to 18-16 while Presbyterian fell to 17-19. The Lancers return to action on Wednesday, April 15, hosting Radford University at 5 p.m.
The Lancers struck first in the first game when sophomore
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) hit a lead-off home run to left field, giving Longwood a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Radford led off the second inning with another homer, this time to center field. Junior
Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) followed with a double to left-center field. Freshman
Lashunda Davis/Natalie (Halifax County) entered as a pinch runner for Betterton and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township). Davis scored on an infield single by
Brittney Latka/Purcellville (Loudon Valley) to give Longwood the 3-0 lead through two innings. Sophomore
Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) led off the third inning with a walk and scored on a
Courtney Long/Mechanicsville (Hanover) home run to give the Lancers a 5-0 lead. The Blue Hose would get three runs back in the bottom of the third inning. Amanda Miller started the scoring with a two-RBI and would later score on a single by Laura Tate Owings, cutting the lead to 5-3. The Lancers would add to their lead in the sixth inning when Long hit her second two-run home run of the game to give Longwood a 7-3 lead. Simmons would add one more run in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 8-3. Long went 2-for-4 with two two-run home runs. Sophomore
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) pitched the complete game, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out eight.
The Lancers jumped on top early in the second game, scoring three runs in the first inning. Simmons scored on a
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) RBI single. Ketsdever and Long scored on a Betterton two-RBI single. Presbyterian would get one run back in the bottom of the first to make the score 3-1 after one inning. Longwood would add four more runs in the top of the second inning, three of them on a bases-clearing three-RBI double by Ketsdever. Radford drove in Ketsdever from third base to give Longwood a 7-1 lead after two innings. Presbyterian would score once in the bottom of the third but Longwood answered in the top of the fourth when Radford hit a three-run home run to right-center field, giving the Lancers a 10-2 lead. They would add one more run in the fifth inning to make the final score 11-2. Sophomore
Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) pitched five innings, giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Radford went 3-for-4 with five RBI in the second game while Ketsdever went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles.
