CLINTON, S.C. – Longwood University dropped a softball game to Presbyterian College, falling 1-0 on Friday afternoon in Clinton, South Carolina. Longwood fell to 16-16 on the season while Presbyterian improved to 17-17. The Lancers return to the diamond on Saturday, April 11, facing the same Blue Hose in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
Longwood gave up one run in the bottom of the first inning which would prove to be the difference in the game. Sophomore
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) started in the circle for the Lancers and retired the first two batters she faced. Presbyterian's Laura Tate Owings singled to right field and came around to score on a two-out RBI double by Katie Anderson, giving the Blue Hose the 1-0 lead after the first inning.
The Lancers stranded four runners, including one in the seventh inning. In the last inning, senior
Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) drew a one-out walk and was replaced on the base path by sophomore
Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward). PC pitcher Mary Gordon recorded her eighth and ninth strikeouts of the afternoon, getting junior
Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) and sophomore
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) to strike out looking to end the game.
Longwood had a runner in scoring position in the first inning and again in the third. Freshman
Lashunda Davis/Natalie (Halifax County) walked in the first inning and advanced to second on a
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) sacrifice bunt. Freshman
Courtney Long/Mechanicsville (Hanover) lined out to the first baseman to end the inning. In the third inning, sophomore
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) was hit by a pitch with two outs. Simmons stole second but advanced no further after Davis struck out looking.
Wells gave up one run on five hits while striking out five in six innings. Radford collected Longwood's only hit while going 1-for-2 from the plate with one walk.
Krysten Handy went 2-for-2 for the Blue Hose. Gordon pitched seven innings and gave up one hit while striking out nine and walking two.
