TROY, Ala. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell at Troy University 74-57 on Tuesday night in Troy, Alabama. The Lancers were led by freshman Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) with 21 points and six rebounds. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, November 28, when they host Texas-Pan American at 2 p.m. in Willett Hall on campus in Farmville. The game is part of the Lancer Classic and follows a matchup between Gardner-Webb University and Morehead State University which begins at 12 p.m.. Admission is free with a canned food donation.

Troy (2-1) jumped out to a 10-0 lead as Longwood (1-4) opened the game shooting 0-5 from the floor in the opening five minutes. A jumper by Coward got the Lancers on the board but the Trojans went on a 6-0 run extend the lead to 16-2 with 13:11 remaining in the half. Coward scored the last eight points of the half for Longwood to make the halftime score 34-21.

The Lancers cut the lead to 11 on a free throw by freshman Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas (La Porte) with 18:44 remaining in the game before Troy went on a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to extend the lead to 21 at 49-28 with 13:51 remaining in the game. Longwood cut the lead to 12 with 4:10 remaining before the Trojans pulled away to make the final score 74-57.

Longwood shot 34.6% (18-52) from the floor, including 14.3% (3-21) from three. Troy shot 47.9% (23-48) from the field, including 52.6% (10-19) in the second half. Both teams grabbed 32 rebounds and the Lancers scored 12 second chance points. The Lancers got 37 points from its bench, including Coward's 21.

Sophomore Emma Zieverink/West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West) scored eight points with three rebounds in 34 minutes. Senior Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) scored six points with six rebounds and four assists. Freshman Crystal Smith/Richmond (Meadowbrook) scored nine points with three rebounds.

The Trojans were led by Donette McNair with 21 points and nine rebounds. Alyce Shearing added 19 points after shooting 5-8 from three. Sophie Kleeman scored 13 points for Troy.
