Longwood Splits At JMU; Lancers Win 4-3 After Falling 15-3

Sophomore Casey Havers Collects Three Hits, Including Home Run, With Five RBI Against Dukes

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader on the road at James Madison Saturday in Harrisonburg, winning the nightcap 4-3 after falling 15-3 in the opener. The Lancers are now 18-12 this season, while the Dukes of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) are now 21-8. Longwood and JMU will play again on Sunday, April 6, at Lancer Stadium in Farmville for another twinbill beginning at 12 p.m..

In the second game, Longwood fell behind 3-0 after three innings before scoring three runs in the fourth inning to tie it at 3-3. The Lancers got a run in the fourth to secure the come-from-behind road triumph. In the fourth, freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (1-2) and sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-3) each singled with two outs and scored on a three-run home run to right-center field by sophomore Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (1-3, 3 RBI). In the fifth, sophomore Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-3, RBI) hit a two-out solo home run to right-center field as well. It was the first career collegiate home run for Ellis, and a game-winner.

Sophomore Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (5-2) picked-up the pitching win with the final 2.2 shutout innings, yielding two hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Garrett Lythgoe/Chesterfield (Matoaca) had started on the mound and went the first 4.1 innings, scattering six hits and three earned runs with one strikeout and one walk.

JMU was led by Trevor Knight (2-4) and Brett Sellers (2-4) with two hits each, while Alex Foltz (1-3 RBI), Steven Caseres (1-3, RBI), and Mike Fabiaschi (1-2, RBI) each contributed one hit and one RBI. Trevor Kaylid (3-2) took the pitching loss with the first 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts and one walk.

In the first game, Longwood fell behind 3-0 after two innings before scoring three runs in the fourth to tie it at 3-3. JMU, however, responded with two runs in the fifth, five runs in the sixth, four runs in the seventh, and one more run in the eighth inning en route to the decisive home victory. In the fourth, Morreim (1-4) and Cerreto (1-4) each singled to open the inning before scoring on a two-run double down the right-field line by Havers (2-3, 2 RBI). Havers crossed the plate on a one-out, RBI single from classmate David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-4, RBI).

Junior John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (4-3) took the pitching loss for Longwood with the first 5.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven runs, six earned, with three strikeouts and two walks.

JMU was led by Joe Lake (4-6, RBI) with four hits and an RBI, followed by Sellers (3-5, 3 RBI) with three hits and three RBI, Fabiaschi (3-5, RBI) had three hits and an RBI, while Caseres (1-4, 3 RBI) contributed a three-run home run. Kyle Hoffman (5-1) earned the mound win with the first 7.2 innings, scattering eight hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts and one walk.
