EMMITSBURG, Md. - Longwood University women's lacrosse (1-5) dropped a heartbreaker to Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-8 in Emmitsburg, Md., after making a comeback late in the game. The Lancers were led by junior Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) who had two goals on five shots. Longwood returns to action on March 11, hosting American at 3 p.m. at the Athletics Complex.
In a game plagued by intense winds and rain, both teams struggled to find their rhythm. Mount St. Mary’s got on the board first, scoring just twenty seconds into the match. Longwood would counter in the 24:07 mark with a free position shot by Warehime that found its way into the net.
Mount St. Mary’s would take control of the game, scoring three unanswered goals within a span of six minutes. Freshman Josie Ziluca/Upperville (Loudoun Valley) would break the scoreless drought for the Lancers in the 12:49 mark, after earning a free position shot. Junior Lauren Barnaba/Bel Air, Md. (The John Carrroll School) and freshman Amanda Bereznay/Gwynn Oak, Md. (Setan Keaugh) would both add goals for the Lancers right before the half, sending Longwood into the locker room trailing 6-4.
After a thirty minute weather delay, the second half began with the Lancers ready to play, scoring three quick goals to take a 7-6 lead. Freshman Cara O’Brien/Arlington (Bishop O’Connell) netted the first Lancer goal of the half at the 27:28 mark off a free position shot. The Lancers would get another goal ten seconds later, this time from sophomore Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s). Junior Liz Sellmayer/Catonsville, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) would notch her fifth goal of the season with 22:09 to play.
Mount St. Mary’s would not go down without a fight, tying the game back up with 21:37 left to play. Warehime would give the Lancers the lead once more with 10:29 to play, after receiving a pass from Sellmayer. The Lancers would hold a 8-7 lead until the 4:28 mark when Katelyn Catanese scored for Mount St. Mary’s. The Mount would score once more with just over a minute left in the half, handing the Lancers a heartbreaking 9-8 loss.
Senior Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) played all 60 minutes in goal for Longwood, collecting 10 saves.
