BOX SCORE

NORFOLK, Va. -- Longwood University took a 3-2 baseball road victory at Norfolk State University Wednesday in Norfolk. The Lancers (4-3) won their second-straight game and were led by junior Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-3, RBI) who drove-in the winning run against the Spartans (3-4) in the eighth inning with a double. Longwood will play again this weekend, March 8-9, hosting Binghamton University from New York for a three-game series at Lancers Stadium beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m..

Longwood spotted Norfolk State two unearned runs in the first inning before scoring a run in the third while earning the two decisive runs in the eighth inning for the come-from-behind road win. The Lancers received solid pitching for the second consecutive day with the efforts of freshman Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) and redshirt-junior Isaac Weiderman/Chillicothe, Ohio (Huntington). Briere (1-0) earned his first collegiate mound win with the first 7.0 innings, scattering six hits and the two unearned runs with nine strikeouts. Weiderman (1) picked-up the save with the final 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding just one hit with two strikeouts.

In the fourth, freshman Marcus Powell/Manassas (Osbourn) (2-4) singled to center and advanced to second on a throwing error, and moved on to third via a wild pitch -- crossing the plate on a ground-ball out by junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (0-3, RBI). In the eighth, Bailey walked with one out and stole second before scoring on an RBI single to left field by junior Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-3, RBI) to tie the game at 2-2. Quigley would come around to score with two outs on Heidler’s clutch, two-out RBI double to left-center field.

Norfolk State scored its two unearned runs courtesy of a two-out, two-run home run to right field by clean-up hitter John Boyd (1-3, 2 RBI) that followed the Spartans’ number three batter reaching base on a catcher interference call. Frankie Caldeyro (1-2) took the pitching loss in relief with the final 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run.
