CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Longwood University softball (17-12) dropped both of its doubleheader games at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Thursday evening, falling in game one 8-0 and 3-1 in game two. Longwood returns to action on March 29 at home when the team hosts Presbyterian at 5 p.m. in a doubleheader.
Game one saw the Lancers unable to get control of the game, falling behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) managed Longwood’s only hit of the game after singling to center field in the top of the second inning.
North Carolina continued to take advantage of the Lancers in the third inning, tacking on two more runs for a 4-0 lead. Longwood fell behind 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, after a series of singles and miscues allowed the Tar Heels to load up the bases.
The game ended in the bottom of the fifth inning when North Carolina scored its final run of the game to take an 8-0 lead.
Senior Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) pitched the complete game for Longwood, striking out six.
Longwood was much improved in game two, out-hitting North Carolina 6-2. The Lancers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) came around to score on a Cami Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) single.
North Carolina would answer back in the bottom of the inning, earning two runs on two errors. Both teams would exhibit their defense, holding each other scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Tar Heels would take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after a single to center field allowed a runner to come home. Longwood would do its best to earn the runs back in the top of the seventh inning when the team had the game-tying runs on base. North Carolina’s pitcher would buckle down to knock out the Lancers' batters, keeping the game in the Tar Heels favor.
Freshman Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) took the loss after pitching six innings and striking out one batter.
