Longwood Advances To Final of Miken Classic With 3-2 Win Over Quinnipiac

Longwood will face Western Kentucky for the Miken Classic Championship

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Longwood University softball (14-7) defeated Quinnipiac 3-2 on Saturday afternoon to advance to the final of the Florida Atlantic/Miken Classic. The Lancers will face Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m., for the Miken Classic championship. The Lancers were led by freshmen Michelle Phillips/Powhatan (Powhatan) who hit 2-3 in the game.

Longwood, who played as the home team, took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after Cami Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) came around to score. Ketsdever led off the inning with a walk.

Quinnipiac tied the game up 1-1 in the top of the third inning after the lead off batter was knocked home on a single to right field. Quinnipiac would take the lead in the fifth inning, making the score 2-1 after an error early in the inning rattled the Lancers.

Longwood pulled out the victory in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring two runs on two hits. Ketsdever once again got the inning started, reaching base on a single up the middle. Freshman Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) followed Ketsdever, scoring her classmate after singling to first base and advancing to second on the throw to the plate. Catelyn Slagle/Chesapeake (Greenbrier Christian Academy) helped the Lancers score its final run when she reached on a fielder’s choice knocking in Kami Nuckols/ Glen Allen (Patrick Henry).
