Farmville, Va. - Longwood University softball (4-3) received a win on Sunday afternoon to earn a spot in the championship game of the Lancer Spring Classic defeated Norfolk State 14-1.
Game one saw the Lancers jump out to an early lead in the second inning, when Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) tripled to center field scoring freshman Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial). Longwood went on to add another run that inning, when Simmons came around to score on a Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) single.
Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) homered in the third inning, scoring her and Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty), putting Longwood up 4-0. Norfolk State would add its lone run in the fifth inning of action, after a player came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Lancers would answer back in the sixth inning, scoring three more runs, as Simmon, Hooe and Washington would once again cross home plate. The seventh inning saw the Lancers score seven runs on six hits, to take the game 14-1.
Senior pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) picked her first win of the season (1-2), after pitching three innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five.
