Longwood Softball Blanked By Pittsburgh 6-0

The Lancer offence was unable to find a way to score against Pittsburgh

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University was shutout in softball by Pittsburgh on Saturday evening as part of the Lancer Lead Off Classic, falling 6-0 at Lancer Field. Longwood falls to 1-2 on the season, while Pittsburgh improved to 1-1 after falling to Morehead State earlier in the day. The Lancers return to action on Sunday, February 17 when they participate in their final game of the Lead Off Classic against Morehead State at 4 p.m.

Longwood could not get its offense going, only mustering three hits during the course of the game. Senior Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman), sophomore Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) and freshman catcher Michelle Phillips/Powhatan (Powhatan) were the only Lancers to reach base.

Pittsburgh managed to put two runs on the board in both the second and third innings of play, forcing the Lancers to fight hard to get back into the match up. The Pittsburgh offense put two more runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings, burying Longwood in a 6-0 hole.

Senior pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) picked up the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the season. Cory Berliner got the complete game win for Pittsburgh, improving to 1-0 on the season.
