BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a hard-fought 2-1 women’s soccer decision to visiting Coastal Carolina University Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Chanticleers of the Big South Conference tallied the decisive goal late in the match at 79:43. The Lancers are now 3-5, while Coastal Carolina improved to 6-4-1. Longwood will next play again on Saturday, October 6, hosting fellow United Soccer Conference member Delaware State University at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m..

Longwood took a 1-0 advantage in the contest when senior Aynsley Birkner/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) headed a corner-kick serve from junior Ingrid Hale/Littleton, Colo. (Chatfield) into the back of the net. It was the first goal of the season for the fourth-year starting defender, while it was the first collegiate assist for Hale, also a defender for the Lancers.

Coastal Carolina, however, responded quickly as senior LSU transfer Ashleigh Gunning gained possession and dribbled-in before placing a hard-hit shot into the lower left corner of the net at 38:37 to tie the game at 1-1. It was Gunning’s ninth goal of the young season, and it remained 1-1 at the intermission. The two teams continued with their evenly-played battle before Chanticleer junior Blair Monroe took possession from a couple of direct passes and one-timed the ball over the home keeper’s head for the game-winning goal at 79:43. Chelsea Terry and Amanda Gelsomino earned the assists on the play for the visitors.

Coastal Carolina would finish with a 15-9 advantage in shots, and had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks, while freshman keeper Amy Haggard went the distance in-goal with three saves. The Chanticleers also picked up two team saves on the day. Longwood redshirt-freshman keeper Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) played the duration as well and made five saves for the Lancers.
