BOX SCORE
DAVIDSON, N.C-- In a nail bitter the Longwood University field hockey team forced overtime on a penalty corner with no time left in regulation, before falling 3-2 to Davidson in double overtime Sunday afternoon. Senior
Mary Freeman/Fredericksburg (Stafford) picked up a loose ball in the circle and fired in the back of the net to send the game into the extra period. The loss puts the Lancers at 2-8 on the season and 1-2 in conference play while Davidson improves to 4-2 on the year and 1-2 in NorPac play. Longwood will return to action on Saturday, September 20 at 3p.m. when they take on #20 Boston University in Charlottesville at University of Virginia.
After a scoreless first half of play Longwood opened up scoring on an unassisted goal by senior
Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) six minutes out of the break. Newbold carried the ball along the back line and drew Davidson’s goalie off the post and slid a shot past Christa Geoke for the 1-0 lead.
Davidson knotted the score at the fifteen minute mark on a goal from Kayli Maxwell and went up by one eight minutes later on a goal from Sarah Addison. The Lancers remained strong and forced a penalty corner in the waning moments of regulation for one last opportunity to tie the game. Newbold was able to stop a wide injection pass and fire it into the circle where Freeman put the shot past Geoke and send the game into overtime.
The Lancers carried the momentum into the first overtime, keeping play in the Davidson end of the field and out shooting the Wildcats 10-1 and holding a 5-0 margin in penalty corners. Longwood however was unable to find the back of the net keeping the game at 2-2 after the first overtime period. On Davidson’s first possession of the second overtime, the Wildcats took the ball down the field and drew a penalty stroke after the ball deflected off a defenders foot in the circle. Maxwell took the stroke and slid the shot past a diving
Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) for the 3-2 win.
Schmitz who saw all 86:20 of action finished the game with five saves while Geoke tallied 12 saves. Longwood outshot Davidson by 23-14 mark and held a 10-4 margin in penalty corners.
