WILLIAMSBURG, Va.-- Longwood University field hockey fell to William and Mary 4-1 Wednesday evening in Williamsburg. The loss puts the Lancers at 1-7 on the year while the Tribe moves to 4-2. Longwood will return to action on Friday, September 14, when they host Radford in a 7 p.m. NorPac Conference match-up.
The Tribe wasted little time to make a mark on the scoreboard, as Laura Kastelic tallied her second goal of the year on a penalty corner just 2:10 into the match. Jessica Kacerek was credited with an assist on the play. Longwood answered back thirteen minutes later as
Katie Claxton/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) made a run down the field and slide a shot past William and Mary’s charging goalie to knot the score at 1-1 with 24:25 to go in the half. The Tribe came right back and grabbed a 2-1 lead off a penalty corner goal by Kim Hedley 1:35 later to head into the halftime break with a 2-1 lead. William and Mary’s Wesley Drew recorded the assist.
William and Mary padded its lead to two goals 9:10 into the second stanza, converting its third penalty corner of the night as Lauren Giles redirected a shot past Longwood’s
Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) for the 3-1 lead. The Tribe were able to capitalize on Longwood mistake on a clear as Kacerek picked off a pass and fired a shot past Schmitz to give the Tribe a 4-1 lead with 17:32 left in the game.
Schmitz finished the game with six saves in 70:00 of action while the Tribe was anchored by Gwen Hunter and Carrie Thompson in the win. Hunter got the start and recorded three saves and had one goal against in 63:18 of time in net while Thompson tallied no saves in 6:42 to preserve the win. William and Mary held a 16-6 margin in shots and recorded 11 penalty corners to Longwood’s four.
