NORFOLK, Va.-- Longwood University field hockey opened its 2007 season with a 6-0 loss to Miami (Ohio) at Old Dominion Saturday afternoon. The Lancers (0-1) were unable to get going offensively as the RedHawks (1-0) held Longwood to no shots in the first half while putting two points on the board en route to the win. Longwood will look to bounce back Sunday, August 26, when they take on Lock Haven in a 1 p.m. match-up.
Miami opened up scoring 13:52 into the game on an unassisted goal by Teja Kammler for the 1-0 lead. The RedHawks continued to pressure the Lancer defense and goalie Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) and doubled their lead with under eight minutes to go in the half on an unassisted goal by Mary Hull.
Miami built a 3-0 lead just three minutes into the second half on a penalty corner goal by Danielle Gaynor. Longwood’s defense held the RedHawks scoreless until mid-way through the second half, where went on a three goal run for the following seven minutes to push the game out of reach. Katie Claxton/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) led the Lancers’ offense with two shots on goal while Erin Murphy/Stafford (North Stafford) tallied a defensive save. Schmitz finished the game with seven saves while Miami was anchored by Megan Stengel who went the full 70:00 and stopped all three shots she faced.
