WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-2 baseball decision at Army Sunday in West Point, New York. The Lancers dropped to 34-16 with their second one-run loss (1-2) to the Black Nights (23-21-1) in two days sandwiched around a 16-10 LU win on Saturday in New York. Longwood will play again on Tuesday, May 8, at Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware.
In the three-game weekend series finale, Longwood scored two run in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead before Army tied it at 2-2 in the sixth inning and won the contest in the extra 10th inning. In the fifth, freshman Frank Berry II/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-3) walked to lead-off and promptly scored when sophomore Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-4, RBI) followed with a double down the right field line. Heidler moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate with two outs on a single by sophomore Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-4, RBI). The Lancers only had six hits in the 10-inning game.
Army collected an unearned run in the third inning via a triple and throwing error, and scored in the sixth on a double and RBI single. The Knights scored the winning run in the 10th via a lead-off single, and three two-out walks, the first intentional before the latter two unfortunate free passes.
Longwood junior right-hander John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) pitched the first 5.1 innings, scattering six hits and two runs, one earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Senior left-hander Needham Jones III/Portsmouth (Woodrow Wilson) (5-3) took the mound loss with the final 4.1 innings of relief, allowing three hits and the one run with three strikeouts and three walks.
