FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader past visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Friday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville; winning the first game 9-8 and the second game 7-2. The Lancers out-slugged the Highlanders in the opener while winning in dramatic fashion by scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs before jumping ahead early in the nightcap en route to the two-game sweep. Longwood improved to 26-11 overall, including a 23-7 record at home, while attaining at least 25 wins for the 20th time in the 29-year history of the program. The Lancers and NJIT (6-14) will play again on Saturday, April 7, another doubleheader at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 12:00 p.m..
In the first game, sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (3-6, RBI) provided the decisive two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning for the second consecutive game. Quigley had three hits in the contest, including a double, and had also driven-in the winning run on Wednesday and this time his clutch hit scored freshman Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (4-5, 5 RBI) who had reached on a bunt-single to open the inning.
Kimble was the offensive standout of the contest with four hits and five RBI, including his first two collegiate home runs -- a three-run blast to left field in the second inning followed by a solo shot off the left-field foul pole to open the fifth inning. He also added an RBI single in the third inning for the Lancers who received three hits and two RBI from freshman Phi Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (3-3, 2 RBI) as well in the opener. Cerreto had a two-run single in the fourth inning for the Lancers who finished with 18 hits in the contest as sophomore Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-6) collected a pair of hits as well. Redshirt-senior left-handed pitcher Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-0) took the mound win with the final 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding no hits with a walk while facing four batters.
NJIT had 12 hits in the opener as Derrick McCain (2-3, 2 RBI) and Kwesi Mitchell (2-5, 2 RBI) each had two hits and two RBI, including a two-run homer from McCain in the seventh inning and a solo home run by Mitchell in the seventh as well. Evan Bigler (1-1) took the pitching loss with the final 4.2 innings of relief, allowing eight hits and the one earned run in the ninth inning.
In the second game, junior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-2, 4 RBI) provided the big hit for Longwood with a grand slam home run to left field in the second inning. The Lancers added three runs in the third inning to lead 7-0 as Cerreto (2-3, RBI) and Kimble (2-3, RBI) each contributed RBI singles and freshman Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-2, RBI) added a sacrifice fly.
Cerreto and Kimble each had two hits to lead the Longwood attack, as did Bailey (2-4) who extended his current hitting streak to 12 games after an earlier 14-game streak this season as well. Sophomore right-handed pitcher John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (5-2) earned the pitching win with a complete game 7.0 inning effort while making his first start of the year, allowing just four hits and two unearned runs with seven strikeouts and two walks.
NJIT avoided the shutout in the ninth inning with a pair of two-out unearned runs plated by a two-run single from Rich Nazario (1-1, 2 RBI) that scored Mitchell (1-2) who had doubled and Rob Pietrocola (0-3) who had reached on an error. PJ Saporito (2-4) took the mound loss for the Highlanders with the first 3.0 innings, yielding 10 hits and seven earned runs with one strikeout and one walk.
