GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 7-2 baseball road decision at High Point University of the Big South Conference Wednesday at First Horizon Park in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Lancers (2-2) were led by freshman Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (3-4) who collected three hits, while the host Panthers (2-1) got three hits each from Randy Schwartz (3-4) and Robby Kuzdale (3-5). Longwood will play again this weekend, February 10-11, at Colonial Athletic Association member Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond at The Diamond. The Lancers and Rams will play two games (DH) on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday, Feb. 11, also at 1 p.m..
Longwood took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when freshman Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (0-0) walked to open the inning, advanced to second and on to third via a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (0-2) that included a throwing error, and later scored during a pick-off and ensuing run-down play between first and second base involving Bailey.
High Point responded with six runs in the fourth inning on six hits and a fielding error in the outfield by the Lancers. The Panthers also got a home run in the inning, a solo shot by Schwartz with one out. High Point also had a two-run double in the frame that also included a bases-loaded walk and a hit batter. Kuzdale added an RBI single in the fourth for the hosts who scored another run in the sixth inning as well when Kuzdale singled again and later scored after consecutive HPU batters were hit by pitches.
Longwood added a final run in the seventh inning after sophomore Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-4) singled, advanced to second on a single by Cerreto, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly from junior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (0-0, RBI). Senior Needham Jones III/Portsmouth (Woodrow Wilson) (0-1) took the pitching loss for the Lancers with the first 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits and six earned runs with one strikeout. Junior Rob Moody/Midlothian (Midlothian) tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding no hits with one strikeout.
