FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept its second-straight baseball doubleheader from visiting Saint Peter’s College Sunday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville; winning the first game 10-4 and the second game 7-6. The Lancers (6-2) took all four weekend games against the Peacocks (0-4), and will now take a four-game winning streak into their next game on Tuesday, February 20, against visiting Old Dominion University at Lancer Stadium beginning at 2:30 p.m..
In the opener, Longwood scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back while adding four runs in the second inning and a final run in the fifth inning. In the first, freshman Rusty Smith/Leesburg (Heritage) (1-2, 2 RBI) had the big blow with a two-run double down the left-field line. Also driving in runs in the inning were sophomore Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (2-3, 2 RBI) on a bases-loaded walk, freshman Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (0-3, RBI) on a ground-out, and senior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-2, RBI) on a single. In the second, freshman Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (0-2, RBI) produced a run on a sacrifice fly to left field, and classmate Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (0-2, RBI) walked to force-in another run. Childress later crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and Smith scored on a passed ball. The Lancers added their final run in the fifth when Heidler singled to right field to score freshman Frank Berry II/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (2-4) who had reached on a one-out single.
Junior right-handed pitcher John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (2-0) earned the pitching win as he worked the first 5.0 innings, scattering five hits and no earned runs with two strikeouts and three walks. Freshman right-hander Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) tossed the final 1.0 inning of relief with two strikeouts and one hit allowed.
Saint Peter’s tallied two unearned runs in both the second and fourth innings and were led in game one by Conor Mullee (2-3, 3 RBI) with two hits, including a two-run single in the fourth. Adam Meyers (0-1) took the mound loss as he only retired two batters in the opening inning while allowing three hits and five earned runs with four walks.
In the nightcap, Longwood rallied from a 6-2 early deficit and scored the winning run in the sixth inning to complete the four-game sweep. The Lancers scored two runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, two runs in the fourth inning, and the decisive run in the sixth. In the first, sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-4, RBI) singled to center field to score senior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (3-3) who had walked to open the inning. Cerreto (2-3, RBI) added an RBI single to left field to score Berry (1-3, 2 RBI)?who had also singled. In the second, sophomore Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-2, 2 RBI) delivered a two-run home run to left-center field as Childress (2-3) scored ahead of him after reaching on a single. In the fourth, Berry drove-in a run on a fielder’s choice, and Bailey crossed the plate when the hosts executed a double-steal play with two outs. Longwood completed the comeback after Berry hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bailey for the third time in the game -- Bailey had reached when hit by a pitch.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (1-0) earned the mound win with the final 5.1 shutout innings, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Saint Peter’s scored a run in the first inning and added five more runs in the second inning for the early four-run advantage. Santo Maertz (2-3, 3 RBI) led the attack with two hits and three RBI, including an RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the second. Wayne Guarino (2-3, 2 RBI) also had two hits with two RBI for the Peacocks, including a two-run double in the second. Alex Hangland (0-1) took the loss on the hill in relief, allowing two hits and the one unearned run, with two strikeouts over the final 2.2 innings.
