BOX SCORE GAME 2
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting Saint Peter’s College Saturday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville; winning the first game 1-0 and the second game 13-1. The Lancers (4-2) and Peacocks (0-2) will play another twinbill on Sunday, February 18, beginning at 12 p.m. in Farmville at Lancer Stadium.
In the opener, Longwood scored the only run it would need in the second inning when sophomore Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (2-3) tripled to left field to open the inning and scored with one out on a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (0-2, RBI). Senior captain and right-handed pitcher Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (1-1) took care of the rest as he tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts and only one walk over the 7.0 innings. Heidler also added a double in the game for the Lancers.
Saint Peter’s was led by Kevin Kallert (2-3) with two hits, including a double, while Jeff Bayse (0-1) took the hard-luck mound loss with a complete-game effort as well. He yielded five hits and the one run with one strikeout and two walks in a game that took just one-hour and 22-minutes to complete.
In the nightcap, Longwood pounded 14 hits while scoring 13 runs to complete the two-game sweep. The Lancers scored one run in the first inning, seven runs in the decisive third inning, two runs in the fifth inning, and three runs in the sixth inning. In the first, senior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-4, RBI) singled to open the inning and later scored on a one-out sacrifice fly to left field by Heidler (0-2, RBI). In the third, LU plated seven runs on five hits and one SPC error with all seven runs scoring after two outs. The big blow was a three-run double to right center field by freshman Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-3, 3 RBI), while sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (3-3, 4 RBI) added a two-run single, freshman Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (2-4, RBI) had an RBI single, and classmate Frank Berry II/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-4, 2 RBI) also had an RBI when he drew a bases-loaded walk.
Longwood scored two runs in the fifth when Berry singled to center field to score freshman Rusty Smith/Leesburg (Heritage) (2-2) who had reached on a pinch-hit infield single. Berry would later score on a one-out sacrifice fly to right field by freshman Chris Despins/Oak Hill (Oakton) (0-1, RBI). The Lancers added three more runs in the sixth as Ames doubled down the left-field line to score Kimble who had reached on an error, and Quigley produced a two-run double down the left-field line to score Ames and Smith who had singled after Kimble’s at-bat.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-0) earned the mound win with the first 5.0 innings, scattering five hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and three walks. Redshirt senior Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) pitched the sixth, allowing no hits and no runs with one walk, while sophomore John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) pitched the final scoreless inning for the Lancers with three strikeouts and one hit allowed.
