FARMVILLE, Va.-- After breaking a career best in points two nights ago, senior guard Keiva Small/Norfolk (Norview) was at it again, leading the Longwood women’s basketball team past UNC Greensboro 62-53 Wednesday evening at Willett Hall. Small recorded 25 points, including a perfect 8-8 from the foul line in the win. The win extended Longwood’s streak to three and puts the Lancers at 5-5 on the year, while the Spartans fall to 1-7 overall. Longwood will look for its fourth win in a row, on Friday, December 7, when they host William and Mary in a 7 p.m. match-up.
The visiting UNC Greensboro jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, after Monique Floyd sunk two lay-ups, forcing the Lancers to take a thirty second timeout with 17:10 to go in the half. Longwood responded out of the break and went on a 14-0 run for the next five minutes, capped by a pair of free throws by Small for the 14-4 score with 12:00 left in the half.
UNC Greensboro began to chip away at the Longwood lead after a timeout of its own and went ahead 23-21 on a jumper by Brittany Frazier at the 5:37 mark of the first half. The Spartans and Lancers continued to exchange points and headed to the locker room with Longwood behind 33-31.
After UNCG hit a lay-up on its opening possession of the half, Longwood went on a 9-0 run to grab the lead for good with 17:58 left in the game from senior Odessa Williams/Stratford, Conn. (Stratford) free throws. Thirty seconds later, Williams made a steal on the defensive end and junior Courtney Dyer/Richmond (Monacan) finished the play hitting the lay-up for the three point lead. The Spartans’ Ashley Ling cut the Lancer lead to one possession on two occasions within two minute mid way through the second half, but Small sunk two timely three pointers, to give Longwood a 48-43 lead with 11:33 left to play.
Junior Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) hit back-to-back jumpers to build the lead to eight three minutes later, forcing the Spartans’ to take a timeout. Small drew a foul behind the arc and went to the line for three free throws and sunk them all to give Longwood the 56-46 lead with 6:18 left in the game. The Lancers continued to build on their lead and took their biggest lead of the game, 13 with 4:57 to go in the game. Small sunk the three to give the Lancers the 59-46 lead, breaking her career mark in points. Longwood never looked back from that point on for the win.
Small also reached a career milestone in blocks, making four in the game. Williams also finished with double-digit points, tallying 12 while pulling down a team high seven points. Longwood went for a season best 86.4% from the free throw line and shot 35.8% from the floor. UNC Greensboro shot 39.0% from the field for the game.
