Women's Basketball Wraps Up Road Trip With 69-58 Win Over Mount St. Mary's

Courtney Dyer Recorded A Season High Ten Points In The Win

EMMITSBURG, MD.-- Behind senior Keiva Small’s/Norfolk (Norview) career-high 24 points, Longwood women’s basketball wrapped up a three game road trip with a 69-58 win over Mount St. Mary’s Monday evening. The win is Longwood’s second consecutive win, and gave the Lancers a 2-1 record for the trip, moving them to 4-5 on the year while the Mountaineers fall to 1-6 overall. The Lancers will return home and host UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, December 5 at 7 p.m..

The Lancers started the game out strong on both sides of the floor, after back-to-back steals on the defensive side gave Longwood the quick 3-0 lead. Longwood took charge inside on its third possession and built a nine point lead on points in the paint from senior Odessa Williams/Stratford, Conn. (Stratford), freshman Mallory Short/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) and Small in the first five minutes of the game. The Longwood defense was also dominant in the early goings, allowing only three shots on the Mountaineers’ first ten possessions while forcing seven turnovers, including five steals.

Longwood took its biggest lead of the half, after Small completed a three point play with 13:32 left in the first half. Mount St. Mary’s battled back and tied the game at 20 at the 5:49 mark on a jumper by Brianna Gauthier. Longwood came out of the final media timeout and took over inside, outscoring the home squad 8-0, led by junior Anna Steg/Vienna (George C. Marshall) to send the teams to the locker room with the score at 28-20 in Longwood’s favor.

The Lancers came out of the locker room and scored on three of the first four times they possessed the ball to build a 13 point lead. Steg completed a three-point play and junior Courtney Dyer/Richmond (Monacan) hit two threes to give Longwood a 37-24 lead. Gauthier hit two free throws to close the gap to nine points with the 8:04 left in the game.

Longwood took its biggest lead of the game on a 13-8 run, led by Small’s nine points during the run, for the 64-48 score with two minutes left in the game. The Mountaineers got as close as 11 points on the final bucket of the game to give the Lancers the win.

Longwood had three players finish in double-digit figures for points, as Small, Steg (15) and Dyer (10) each had season highs. Small led the Lancers on the boards pulling down a game high eight. Longwood shot 26-60 (43.3%) from the floor while Mount St. Mary’s shot 40.7% from the floor.
