Longwood Falls At Wake Forest 57-26

Freshman Cierra Baker Scores Five Points Off The Bench Against Demon Deacons

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Longwood University dropped a 57-26 women’s basketball road decision at Wake Forest University of the ACC Sunday night at the Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Demon Deacons (12-2) took advantage of a 13-0 run to open the contest, and a 14-4 run to begin the second half while cruising to the home victory, led by Alex Tchangoue with 17 points, five assists, and four steals. The Lancers (6-8) were led by freshman Cierra Baker/Windsor, Conn. (Windsor) with five points off the bench. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, January 2, at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Connecticut beginning at 2 p.m..

At Wake, Longwood forged an early 2-2 tie at 17:20 on a jumper from junior Courtney Dyer/ Richmond (Monacan). The Demon Deacons, however, put together the early 13-0 run to lead 15-2 with 12:45 left before halftime. The hosts extended the advantage to 23-6 at 8:51 before the Lancers used a 6-2 spurt to pull within 25-12 with 5:31 left before the break as Dyer capped the scoring with a layup. Wake Forest scored the final four points of the half to lead 29-12 at the intermission, though neither team scored over the final 3:06 of the opening period.

Wake Forest outscored Longwood 14-4 during the first 6:23 of the second half to lead 43-16 at 13:37, and extended the margin to 53-19 with 6:24 remaining after a three-point field goal and a layup. The Lancers closed to 55-26 at 1:18 with a 7-2 scoring run capped by a three-pointer from freshman Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland). The Demon Deacons tallied the final points on another layup with 41-seconds left to provide for the final margin of victory.

Baker finished with five points off the bench to lead Longwood, while four other Lancers added four points each, including Dyer. LU shot just 17% (11-64) from the field, including only 13% (2-15) on three-point field goals, and 100% (2-2) at the free throw line.

Tchangoue finished with 17 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals to lead Wake Forest. Corinne Groves added 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Demon Deacons as the only other player to reach double-figure scoring for the hosts. WFU shot 39% (24-61) from the field, including 20% (2-10) on three-pointers, and 88% (7-8) at the line.

It was the first-ever meeting between Longwood and Wake Forest in women’s basketball.
