FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 1-0 men’s soccer home victory past visiting Radford University Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. It was the third-straight win for the Lancers who improved to 6-8-2, while the Highlanders dropped to 9-7. Longwood will remain home for its final regular season contest against Howard University next Saturday, November 10, beginning at 3 p.m. for SENIOR DAY.
Against Radford, Longwood sophomore Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) tallied what would prove to be the game-winning goal late in the first half at 38:38. Vickerton scored on a header off a corner kick serve from classmate Brian Germain/McLean (Langley). Senior keeper Brandt Youmans/ Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) took care of the rest with two saves to preserve the shutout while playing the entire match in front of the net.
Longwood took a 12-7 advantage in shots, including 6-2 on-goal, while Radford had an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Zach Roszel (90:00) also played the duration in goal for the Highlanders with five saves to keep the match close. The home triumph in front of the largest crowd this season (325) evened the all-time series between the two schools at 5-5-1.
