Women's Soccer Falls To Virginia Tech 4-0; Senior Day Sunday At 11 a.m.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 4-0 women’s soccer decision to visiting Virginia Tech Thursday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Hokies of the ACC broke open a close match that was tied 0-0 at the intermission with three quick goals during a five-minute (4:59) stretch late in the contest, improving to 7-7-3 overall while the Lancers are now 9-7-1 overall. Longwood will play its final regular season game on Sunday, November 4, hosting South Dakota State at the Athletics Complex in Farmville for SENIOR DAY beginning at 11 a.m..

Longwood had battled the physical Hokies to a scoreless opening 45 minutes and continued its outstanding effort in the second half before Virginia Tech scored its first goal at 59:43. The decisive goal was tallied by Jennifer Harvey on a header off a long throw-in from the right sideline by Julian Johnson. The Lancers tried to equal the goal by the visitors with a couple of opportunities over the next 10 minutes but were unable to convert before the Hokies took advantage of the late scoring barrage to secure the road win. Emily Jukich scored back-to-back goals at 76:17 and 77:07, and Jessica Varela added a final goal at 81:16 to complete the three-goal flurry in 4:59 for the final margin. Marika Gray contributed two assists to the late blitz by the Hokies.

Virginia Tech took a 21-3 advantage in shots, including 11-3 on-goal, and had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks as well. Senior Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers with seven saves. Robin Chidester played the duration for the Hokies as well with two stops, while VT also had a team save. The visitors were whistled for 12 fouls to four charged against LU. Virginia Tech now leads the brief overall series between the two schools at 2-0.
