BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University field hockey recorded its third consecutive win Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex, beating Appalachian State 4-3.  Senior Katie Claxton/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) had another explosive game offensively, scoring two goals and one assist in the win.  The win puts the Lancers at 5-9 on the year while the Mountaineers fall to 2-10 on the year.  Longwood will return to action on Sunday, October 7, when they host Pacific in a 12 p.m. match-up for a NorPac conference match-up.

The Lancers open the scoring early, capitalizing on their first penalty corner of the afternoon just two minutes into the contest.  Claxton took a pass from junior Carla Binnewies/Hamburg, Germany (Carl von Ossietzky Gymnasium) at the top of the circle and ripped a shot that was sailing wide, until sophomore Julia Hernandez/Norfolk (Maury) tipped it in for the 1-0 lead.  Longwood caught the Mountaineer defense in a quick counter attack, after senior Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) intercepted a pass at midfield and carried it in with Claxton running, down the center.  Newbold drew the defender in and fed a pass to Claxton in the middle, but the senior was unable to get to the other end keeping the game at 1-0.

Longwood’s anticipation came in handy a short time later as Hernandez picked off an ASU pass just outside the circle and found Claxton in the circle who made a quick move and banged in the shot for the 2-0 lead with 24:59 remaining in the half.  Appalachian State was right on the door step thirty seconds later, as Alicia Larkins took a rebound and was firing away at junior keeper Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) who was laid out on the ground.  One of Larkins’ shots squirted through West and was rolling in until senior Erin Murphy/Stafford (North Stafford) knocked out the shot for her team leading, fifth defensive save of the year.

ASU was able to break up the Longwood shut with under eight minutes left in the first half as Jessica Harris, scored her first of three goals to put the game at 3-1 at halftime.

After a quick ASU goal just 0:47 into the second half, Longwood was able to bring the game back to a two-goal deficit as sophomore Jessica Mantel/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) picked up a loose ball in the circle and slid it past the Mountaineers’ keeper for the 4-2 lead.  The Mountaineers continued the to fight and brought the game back to an one goal game, but could not find the equalizer as the Lancers’ defense and keeper West preserved the win.

West finished the game with five saves while Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) who started the game tallied three in the opening 15:58 of the game.  For ASU Denise Adams tallied two saves and three goals against in the first thirty-five minutes, while Sabra Holt played the final thirty-five minutes making seven saves and allowing one goal.  Longwood out shot the Mountaineers 17-13 and recorded nine penalty corners while ASU recorded three.
