BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 1-0 women’s soccer victory past the University of Richmond Sunday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancers earned their first win against the Spiders in two meetings after a tie last year, and are now 7-6-1 overall while Richmond is now 4-10-2 overall. Longwood will play again on Friday, October 26, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. beginning at 7 p.m..

Longwood and Richmond battled evenly throughout the contest and were tied 0-0 at the intermission. The Spiders were whistled for a foul early in the second half at 58:32 that resulted in a free kick for the Lancers. The foul also forced an injury substitution by the hosts as senior Kristina Reed/Spotsylvania (Chancellor) entered and promptly headed the perfectly-placed free kick serve from sophomore Sarah Fening/Manassas (Battlefield) into the far corner of the net. What proved to be the game-winning goal was the first of her collegiate career for Reed who moved to a forward position this year after playing in the defensive backfield for three years, while Fening’s assist was her team-best third this season.

Richmond took a 12-5 advantage in shots, though only two attempts were on-goal, and the Spiders had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks as well. Longwood placed three of its five shots on-goal, and senior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) made two saves while playing the duration in front of the net for the Lancers to earn her fourth shutout this fall, and 12th of her career. Kate Hudson played the entire match in front of the net for Richmond with two saves as well.

Longwood and Richmond fought to a 0-0 overtime tie last season in Richmond in the only previous meeting between the two schools in women’s soccer.
