LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University battled to a 1-1 women’s soccer overtime tie at VMI Thursday evening in Lexington. The Lancers are now 6-6-1 overall, while the Keydets are now 4-9-2 overall. Longwood returns home to host the University of Richmond on Sunday night, October 21, at the Athletics Complex located on Johnston Drive beginning at 7 p.m..
Longwood led 1-0 at the intermission against VMI as the Lancers executed a successful corner-kick opportunity at 20:40 when freshman Lauren Trizna/Manassas (Osbourn Park) scored her first collegiate goal on a header from the serve by classmate Kayla Huggins/North Haven, Conn. (North Haven). It was Huggins’ first collegiate assist, as well, for the early advantage. The host Keydets tied the match early in the second half on a penalty-kick goal from Jessica Robbins after a questionable hand-ball call in the box at 49:08. Neither team managed another score for the remainder of the second half and through two, 10-minute overtime periods while deadlocking at 1-1.
Longwood took an 18-14 advantage in shots, and had a 9-5 edge in corner kicks as well. Senior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) made seven saves while playing the duration in front of the net for the Lancers. VMI split time in goal between Angela Redmond (45:00) who allowed a goal with three saves and Kathleen Underwood (65:00) who made five saves.
Longwood now has a 3-0-1 record against VMI since beginning the series in 2003.
