RADFORD, Va. -- Longwood University took a 2-0 women’s soccer road victory at in-state opponent and Big South Conference member Radford University Wednesday night in Radford. It was the second win in two seasons against the Highlanders as the Lancers improved to 5-3-2 with their second-straight win, while Radford dropped to 3-6-0. Longwood will play its opening United Soccer Conference match of the season this Sunday, October 1, at Delaware State University beginning at 4 p.m..
At Radford, Longwood went ahead 1-0 at the intermission after senior Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) scored her first goal of the season with a header into the net from a crossing assist by classmate Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam) at 31:37. The Lancers secured their road triumph in the second half at 78:34 as freshman Colleen Thamm/Manassas (Battlefield) tallied her second goal of the season with a blast to the right post after the hosts were unable to clear a free kick.
"I thought we played very well early in the game and got the first goal," explained 13th-year head coach Todd Dyer. "We got a timely goal in the second half and were able to hold on for a solid road win."
Radford did take a 20-9 advantage in shots, though Longwood had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Junior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (90:00) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers with seven saves en route to her second-straight shutout, and fourth overall this season. Tara Oleartchick (90:00) also played the duration for the Highlanders with three saves.
