NEW MARKET, Va. -- Longwood University totaled 158 points to finish sixth among eight teams at the JMU Open women’s cross country race Saturday in New Market. Duke won the event with its 32 points, while the Blue Devils’ Emily McCabe won the 5.1K race in 18:20. The Lancers will compete again September 29 at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
At the New Market Battlefield, Longwood was led by junior Kristin Novara/Winchester (Millbrook) with her time of 21:45 in the 5.1K race to finish 27th among 71 runners. Novara was followed by freshmen Jacquelyne Chantry/Williamsburg (Lafayette) (22:03, 32nd) and Laura Bland/Las Vegas, Nev. (Palo Verde) (22:27, 46th), sophomore Sarah Chapman/Hampton (Bethel) (22:54, 56th), along with freshman Priscilla Sherwood/Newport News (Woodside) (24:50, 64th). Chantry and Bland each ran new personal-best times.
Also running for the Lancers was sophomore Sarah Barr/Williamsburg (Bruton) (25:27, 66th).
