RICHMOND, Va. -- Longwood University battled the University of Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference to a 0-0 tie in women’s soccer action Thursday night in Richmond. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in the sport as the Lancers are now 3-2-2, while the Spiders are now 0-6-1. Longwood will play again this Sunday, September 17, at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina beginning at 1 p.m..
At Richmond, the two teams battled scoreless through both halves of the regulation 90 minutes and for two additional 10-minute overtime periods. The Spiders took a 32-7 advantage in shots, and had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. The Lancers were able to secure the tie behind the efforts of junior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (110:00) who made 14 saves, and their bend-but-don’t break defense. Kate Hudson (110:00) also went the distance in front of the net for Richmond, making two saves.
“It feels good to go on the road against a program of Richmond’s caliber and come away with a positive result,” said 13th-year head coach Todd Dyer. “We defended really well and kept everything in front of us - the majority of their shots were from long distance. We’ll definitely look to build on this effort as we travel to Appalachian State this weekend.”
