BOX SCORE
Lewisburg, Pa.-- The Longwood University field hockey team fell to the Bucknell Bisons 3-0 Sunday afternoon in Lewisburg, Pa. The loss puts the Lancers at 1-4 on the season, while Bucknell improves to 4-1. Longwood will return to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Georgetown for a 1 p.m. match-up.
The Lancers controlled the ball for most of the first half putting pressure on the Bucknell defense.
“That was our best first half of the season,” explained head coach Nancy Joel. “We came out relaxed and had some great chances on the counter attack.”
Longwood however was unable to convert sending the game into the halftime break as a 0-0 tie. The scoreless tie was broken at the 38:51 mark when Amanda Faust took a pass from Anne Lutz and slid it past junior keeper Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) for the 1-0 lead. Bucknell was able to cash in on two defensive miscues on penalty corners to push the game out of reach of the Lancers. West finished the game with six saves, while Bucknell’s Emily Groendyke recorded three saves in the win.
“Our defense was held together by Katie Murphy and our forward line played very well,” stated Joel. “We’re going to regroup, watch some video learn from this and come out ready to go against Georgetown Saturday.”
