BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University field hockey suffered a 3-0 set back in the match-up with Towson on Friday evening at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The loss puts the Lancers at 0-2 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 1-1. Longwood will host Appalachian State Saturday, September 2 at 1 p.m. in a NorPac Conference match-up.
The Lancers found themselves behind early on in the match, as the Tigers tallied two goals 3:09 apart for the early lead. While off balance and making her way to the Lancer’s net, Towson’s Kajee Murangi pushed a shot passed keeper Erin West/ Stafford (North Stafford) for the Tiger’s first goal. Towson struck a short time later, when Murangi put in her second goal of the game and padded the lead to two goals. Towson added a goal later in the half on a broken penalty corner that came off the stick of Kim McEwen.
“The slow starts are killing us,” explained head coach Nancy Joel. “We need to come out ready to go and not wait for a half to pass and begin to play. The second half was much better, we began to see each other and make a string of passes.”
LU had a chance to break onto the scoreboard mid-way through the second half, as junior Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) pulled Towson’s keeper Christina Armer out, and slid the ball to the lower right corner. The Tiger’s McEwen was tracking back and hit the ball out before it crossed, keeping Longwood off the board.
Towson held a 9-4 advantage in shots, and slight edge in penalty corner 7-6. West recorded six saves in 70 minutes of work, while Armer and Michelle Cheek combined for the shut out making one stop.
