BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University opened up its 2006 season with a 5-0 loss to nationally-ranked Indiana Sunday afternoon at the Lancers' new Athletics Complex in Farmville. Indiana is currently ranked 10th on the STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. The Lancers will return to action on Friday, September 1, when they host Towson for a 3 p.m. match.

The Hoosiers dominated the first half, scoring their first three goals in the opening eight minutes. IU’s Lydia Schrott led the way, tallying two of her three goals in the first thirty-five minutes, giving the Hoosiers a 3-0 halftime lead.

The Lancers threatened late in the first half, but were unable to get anything by IU’s Haley Exner. Longwood’s best chance came in the final five minutes of the half, when a free ball squirted out of a crowd in the middle and onto the stick of Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury), who was unable to pull the trigger quick enough and had her shot blocked out by an Indiana defender.

In the cage for the Lancers was junior Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) who finished the game with 11 saves and was under intense pressure all afternoon.

Indiana held the Lancers to four shots, while getting off 23 in the offensive end and had a 19-3 edge in penalty corners.
