BOX SCORE
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 4-3 collegiate baseball decision at George Mason University of the Colonial Athletic Association Tuesday afternoon in Fairfax. Ironically, the Lancers (18-18) had defeated the Patriots (13-19) by the same 4-3 score just one week ago in Farmville. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, April 12, at the University of Virginia (27-9, #17) in Charlottesville beginning at 7 p.m..
At GMU, the Patriots scored first in the third inning when Mike Genoveses (0-2) scored on a ground ball from Spencer Wiggins (1-4, RBI) for a 1-0 lead. Longwood responded in the fourth inning as junior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-2) was hit by a pitch, and later scored on an RBI double from classmate Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-5, RBI). Mason re-took the lead in the fourth with two unearned runs for a 3-1 lead, and made the score 4-1 in the sixth inning when Scott Krieger (1-3, RBI) led-off with a solo home run.
In the eighth inning, freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (3-5) singled and was followed at the plate by a double from classmate Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (2-4). Junior Ryan Rowe/Richmond (Varina) (2-4, 2 RBI) came through with a clutch, two-out, two-run single to score both Quigley and Heidler. The Lancers again threatened with two outs in the ninth inning as Quigley reached on a single but did not advance.
Freshman Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-5) took the pitching loss for Longwood, allowing six hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts over the first 5.1 innings.
