FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a collegiate baseball doubleheader to visiting UMBC Saturday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, falling 9-3 in the first game and 9-0 in the second game. The Lancers dropped to 16-16, while the Retrievers improved to 10-12 this season. Longwood and UMBC will play again on Sunday, April 2, at Lancer Stadium beginning at 1 p.m..
In the opener against UMBC, Longwood scored three runs in the sixth inning to avoid the shutout. In the sixth, freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (0-2, RBI) drove home classmate Robbie Bailey/ Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-3) with a sacrifice fly to left field after Bailey had earlier led-off with a single. Redshirt sophomore Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (2-3, 2 RBI) followed with the one-out, two-run home run to left field to score junior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-3) who had singled as well.
UMBC scored three runs in the third inning, aided by two errors, adding two runs in the fifth inning, before pushing four runs across the plate in the seventh inning with help from another error. The Retrievers were led by Zach Clark (3-4, RBI) with three hits and an RBI, including a double and an RBI single. Tom Meaney (2-4, 3 RBI) added two hits and three RBI, including a pair of run-producing singles.
Redshirt junior Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) (3-3) took the pitching loss for LU with the first 4.1 innings, scattering six hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Jon Pavlis (3-3) got the complete-game win for UMBC, allowing eight hits and three earned runs with one strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
In the nightcap, UMBC scored four runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, one run in the third inning, and two more runs in the fourth inning en route to its shutout and sweep of the twinbill. For the Lancers, Ames (2-3) collected two hits to lead the offense. The Retrievers were led by Mark Lemon (2-4) with two hits, while Steve Bowen (1-4, 2 RBI) had two RBI and two stolen bases.
Sophomore John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (2-2) took the pitching loss while failing to register an out as the starter, yielding one hit and two earned runs while facing five batters. Junior Clay Horn/Culpeper (Culpeper County) went the final 3.0 innings of relief, allowing just one hit. Tim Comiskey (1-2) got the complete-game shutout win for UMBC, scattering six hits with one strikeout in 7.0 innings.
