GREENVILLE, N.C.. – The Longwood University softball team fell to host East Carolina 5-1 in the championship contest of the ECU tournament this afternoon in Greenville, N.C. The Lancers defeated Delaware 5-3 earlier in the day to earn the spot in the championship game. LU closed out the weekend with a 4-2 overall record at the tournament and are now 9-7 on the year. Longwood will be back in action March 8-11 when it participates in the Hawaii Tournament held in Honolulu, Hawaii. Other tournament participants are UNLV, Penn State, UCSB and Detroit Mercy.
n its first game of the day, Delaware jumped out on top in the top of the second when it scored three unearned runs.
The Lancers cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when senior second baseman Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) was driven home on a single by freshman third baseman Kori Bonnor/Round Hill (Loudoun Valley).
A four-run sixth inning capped off Longwood’s come-from-behind victory. Junior catcher/outfielder Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) singled to score sophomore shortstop Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty), and then senior first baseman Victoria Masters/Lake City, Fla. (Thomas University-Ga.) cracked a three-run home run to give the Lancers the lead and win.
Freshman pitcher Denee Porter/Glendale, Ariz. (Sandra Day O’Connor) earned her first victory for the Lancers, giving up no runs on three hits, while striking out two and walking one in five innings of action.
In the championship game against East Carolina, the Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Krista Jessup, who started the inning off with a double, scored on an error by sophomore pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County). ECU added a run in the top of the fourth inning to increase its lead to 2-0.
The Lancers finally got on board in the bottom of the fourth when Gordon singled to drive in Wilson. Longwood, who then had runners on first and third with two outs, was unable to score the equalizer.
The Pirates then pounced, scoring a run in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh inning to secure the 5-1 championship victory.
Mills took the loss for Longwood, giving up three unearned runs on four hits, while striking out one in six innings of work.
