Baseball Rallies Past Campbell 8-7

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an 8-7 collegiate baseball victory past Campbell University of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tuesday afternoon at Lancer Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers avenged a 14-8 loss to the Camels last Wednesday (March 22) while improving their record to 15-14 as Campbell dropped to 8-17 overall.  Longwood will play again on Wednesday, March 29, at Radford University of the Big South Conference beginning at 3 p.m..
    
Longwood led 6-0 through five innings against Campbell before the Camels rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to make it 6-5.  The Lancers responded with a run in the sixth to lead 7-5 but CU added a run in the seventh inning and another run in the ninth inning to tie the game at 7-7.  Longwood, however, promptly loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and scored the game-winner with one out on a single to right field by sophomore Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-1, RBI) to score classmate Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-3, RBI) who had reached on a fielding error.
    
Longwood opened with two runs in the first inning as junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (3-5, 2 RBI) singled to center field to score classmate Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (0-2) who had been hit by a pitch to lead-off the frame.  von Gersdorff followed with another RBI single to left field to score redshirt sophomore Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (1-4, RBI) who had drawn a walk.
    
In the second inning, Zigrang’s infield single scored freshman Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-3) who had reached on a lead-off walk.  In the third inning, the Lancers added another run when freshman Brandon Maupin/Woodbridge (Potomac) (0-3, RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to score von Gersdorff who had also drawn a lead-off walk.  LU plated two runs in the fifth inning as freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (5-5, 2 RBI) hit his third home run of the season, a two-run blast to left center field.  Quigley was perfect on the day with five hits in five at-bats.  The hosts added another run in the sixth inning when Childress doubled to score freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (0-4) who had also walked.
    
Redshirt junior Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) (3-2) earned the pitching win with the final 3.2 innings, yielding six hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.  Junior Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) went the first 5.1 innings on the mound, scattering nine hits and five earned runs with three strikeouts.      
    
Campbell was led offensively by Mike Priest (4-5, 3 RBI) with four hits and three RBI, including a home run and two doubles.  Tim Holt (4-5) also had four hits for the Camels, while Chris England (1-3) took the pitching loss with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing three hits and one unearned run with two strikeouts.
